AUTOMOTIVE PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM                              DESCRIPTION for 2011

The Automotive Performance Technology program at Gloucester County College is a 22-month curriculum that alternates between classroom instruction and paid internship at regional automotive service providers, such as fleets, private garages and retail chain service providers. The main difference between this program and the ASSET program is where you do your CO-OP. The classes are the same.

The Automotive Technology classes, which include lecture and hands-on shop experiences, are held at the Gloucester County College Automotive Center located behind the Gloucester County Institute of Technology (GCIT).  These courses cover bumper-to-bumper technical training on  domestic automotive products, including the latest developments in engines, ignitions, fuel systems, on-board electronics, and computerized engine controls.

Supportive liberal arts courses, including mathematics, science and computer classes, are held on the Gloucester County College campus, adjacent to GCIT on  Tanyard Road in Sewell, New Jersey.

Automotive Performance Technology is divided into five 20-week semesters.  Ten-week sessions of classroom and shop experiences alternate with ten weeks of paid internship/cooperative education at participating automotive service providers in the Delaware Valley.  Internships allow students to apply classroom training in a real-work setting.  In addition, students become familiar with the automotive service environment and organizational structure, as well as the competencies expected of a professional automotive technician.  Students are paid a salary for their work experiences  during their internship (CO-OP) periods.

Students who successfully complete this selective-admission program are awarded Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees in Automotive Technology from Gloucester County College.  Upon graduation, they have the option to enter the workforce immediately as  automotive technicians, or continue their education.  Graduates who continue their education usually enter bachelor’s degree programs in automotive management and/or business and pursue manufacturer positions in the automotive industry.

The authority to grant a degree in Automotive Technology was granted to Gloucester County College by the New Jersey Board of Higher Education on November 30, 1989.
